Greetings from the President: Winter 1999, Vol. 19, No. 1

As I write this last of my "Greetings" columns for the Update, I find myself reflecting upon the past year of my presidency with GHSLA. It's said that time flies when you are having fun, and that has certainly been the case during this year. Serving as GHSLA President has been both enjoyable and rewarding. Enjoyable because of the enthusiastic and dedicated group of individuals I've has the opportunity to work with, and rewarding because of the accomplishments of GHSLA over the past year. Our association is the glue that binds us all together, whether we are academic, hospital or special librarians.

I cannot overstate the importance that health sciences library associations have on our profession. They play a major role in introducing best practices in various areas. They address evolving developments in technology, education and all the other integral components of librarianship. I doubt there are any of us who haven't felt overwhelmed at times with the rate of change occurring in our workplace. This will not abate as libraries evolve more and more into learning organizations. Even while change continues to escalate, the funding to train and retool continues to diminish. GHLSA provides the opportunity to meet and learn with other professionals in a low cost, convenient location.

If you haven't already rejoined GHSLA for 1999, please do so. I also encourage you all to think about service to the Association. Perhaps you would like to volunteer to serve on a committee - we would be pleased to have you.

You may be interested in service as an officer in the future. Or maybe the extent of your involvement is to attend the annual meeting and avail yourself of the CE courses. At whatever level, the important aspect is to be involved. Peer interaction is so essential to career growth and enrichment.

-Donna Trainor, President
