My year
as President of GHSLA is quickly drawing to a close. It has been a
pleasure working with the members of the Executive Board. I would
like to specifically recognize Pauline Hollmann, the Program Chair
of this upcoming 2000 Annual Meeting, who has faced many challenges
in planning this meeting. At last years annual meeting at Unicoi State
Park, members participated in a Strategic Planning session for GHSLA
that will give the organization a road map for the beginning of the
21st century. The Executive Board is just starting to implement this
Strategic Plan. Some of these features will be a better and improved
GHSLA website, a listserv and more interactions with health professionals
in other disciplines such as medicine, nursing and public health.
The Annual
Meeting this year at Sea Palms, St. Simons Island March 15-17, 2000
will occur in less than two months. Recently due to financial problems
and budget cuts in health facilities in Atlanta, one hospital closed
and in another hospital, a librarians job was eliminated. Healthcare
financial problems are occurring all over the state and can affect
anyone of us at some point in our careers as librarians. We must become
advocates not only for ourselves but also for librarianship in general.
Challenge
yourself and plan to attend this very important GHSLA Annual Meeting
Navigating the Waters of Change at Sea Palms, St. Simons Island March
15-17, 2000. You will find that the Program theme of this meeting
is about your own professional development Some meeting highlights
are the following:Wednesday night's open forum on Interlibrary Loan
in Georgia and on Thursday, Carol Burns, Director of the Emory Health
Sciences Library will be the Miriam Libbey Lecture Speaker. Her presentation
is entitled A Life of Learning. Rosalind Lett along with other selected
colleagues will present a Professional Competencies Workshop later
that day. On Friday, there will be two half day continuing education
classes entitled: The Use And Management of Electronic Serials and
The New Docline.
See you
at the meeting! If you have any concerns about GHSLA, please call
me at 404-727-0285 or email me at librcb@emory.edu.
