Annual Meeting Minutes, Hilton Hotel, Columbus, Georgia
March 15, 2001

Call to Order: Carolyn Brown called the meeting to order at 8:50 a.m.

Approval of Minutes: The members approved the 2000 annual meeting minutes with one minor change on a motion by Donna Trainor and Paula Christian.

Officers' Reports

Secretary: Mike Shadix reported that the executive committee had met four times since the last annual meeting, and that minutes were kept of each meeting. He encouraged

Treasurer: Paula Christian told the membership that GHSLA was in good shape financially because the organization made a good profit from last year's meeting. She also told the group that final report on the 2001 annual meeting would be prepared after the conclusion of all financial business of the event.

UPDATE Editor: Mia Sohn White reported that the UPDATE newsletter was published as normal at a cost of $40 to $50 per issue.

Parliamentarian: Beth Poisson reported that all meetings of the organization were conducted according to Robert's Rules of Order, Newly Revised.

Webmaster: Lee McCarley reported that he has updated the membership information on the GHSLA web page and added several new features during the past year. He thanked everyone who helped with this process.

Committee Reports

Program: Cathy Woolbright thanked everyone who helped with the preparation of the 2001 annual meeting. She asked that everyone file out and return the meeting evaluation form because the information gathered from the 2000 meeting had been helpful in the preparation of the 2001 meeting.

Consumer Health: Jan LaBeause reported that the book Preventive Medicine and Patient Education was due out the next day, March 16, 2001. Members of GHSLA prepared 55 pages of the 850-page book, and the organization will receive $550 for their work. LaBeause thanked everyone who helped with the book and announced that all co-authors will receive a free copy of the book. LaBeause also announced that GHSLA's process of writing for the book has been accepted as a poster presentation at MLA 2001 in Orlando. The title of the poster will be "2001-The Final Chapter: A Collaborative Project of the Consumer Health Committee of the Georgia Health Science Library Association." Two announcements about consumer health librarianship were posted on the GHSLA e-mail distribution list. The first announced an electronic journal club about consumer health information and the second announced a new web-based tutorial on consumer health question by the NN/LM Pacific Northwest Region.

Membership: Roxanne Nelson read the names of five new members of GHSLA: Jeanette Blalock, Henry Medical Center; Sunitha Nair, Mercer Medical Library; John Roy, Blue Ridge AHEC; Peter Shipman, Medical College of Georgia and Ronald Wirtz, Medical College of Georgia. She also announced the names of two new honorary members: Donna Trainor and Carol Burns. Nelson then read the nomination letter for each new honorary member. GHSLA now has 9 honorary members and 61 regular members. Nelson concluded her report by thanking the members of the Membership Committee for their work during the past year.

Continuing Education: Lynette Ralph announced that two CE courses are being offered in conjunction with this annual meeting: Bringing your Library's Resources to the Web and SuperSearcher.

Miriam Libbey: Pamela Queen announced that Jocelyn Rankin would serve as the Miriam Libby speaker during the 2001 meeting. She thanked the members of her committee for their help in making the arrangements.

Strategic Planning: Donna Trainor thanked the members of the Strategic Planning Committee and stated that improved communication was one of the most important components of the current plan. Toward that goal the Strategic Planning Committee established a GHSLA e-mail list. This list is available to all members of GHSLA, and Trainor encouraged the membership to use the new service.

Nominating: Carolyn Brown presented the following slate of officer candidate for 2001-2002:

  • President Cathy Woolbright
  • Vice President Paula Christian
  • Treasurer Mia Sohn White
  • Secretary Michael Shadix
  • Parliamentarian Beth Poisson
  • Web Master Lee McCarley
  • UPDATE Editor Shirley Williams

The membership approved the new officers on a motion by Jan LaBeause and second by Roxanne Nelson. Brown distributed copies of revised bylaws that state that from now on, the immediate past president of GHSLA will serve as chair of the nominating committee during the coming year.

Other Business

Paula Christian, Carolyn Brown and Beth Poisson performed a brief skit inviting the membership to next year's annual meeting at the Crown Plaza Rivinia in Atlanta. In addition to the skit, the drama team presented a short video about Atlanta attraction and distributed literature about the hotel and city. They also thanked Cathy Woolbright for her work organizing the 2001 annual meeting.

Cathy Woolbright presented a certificate of appreciation to outgoing president Carolyn Brown.

Adjournment: There being no further business, Brown adjourned the meeting at 9:25 a.m.
